So what is epidemiology anyways?
Figure 3 - Epidemiology Triangle
Epidemiology is the study of characteristics, behaviours, and patterns that may make certain persons more susceptable to disease than others (Epidemiology Basics, 2013). It is also studies the occurrence, frequency, and distribution of diseases in a given population, and tries to understand the possible causes of disease in order to provide clues as to potential treatments through observation, surveillance, or statiscal analysis (Merrill, 2013). Once an outbreak of a disease or health related issue has been identified, classified and it's nature risk and frequency of infection has been established, epidemiology provides a means to gauge the efficacy of implemented treatment programs, and allows us to institute risk-detection and prevention strategies towards future health concerns (Merrill, 2013). Lastly. epidemiology can be considered the foundation of public health, because it provides information about health status trends, and the social condition of a community. The study of epidemiology is well rooted within history, and although the persons and events discussed in this website do not represent epidemiology in it's entirety, that which has been chosen, has been in effort to highlight significance in the development of epidemiology as a science, as well as provide opportunity for discussion regarding the importance of the differing sub-gorups of this science.
